Choosing a Beautiful Outdoor Location for Maternity Portraits
Alyssa came to the session with inspirational images, and we always do our best to meet or exceed each client’s vision. To begin, we searched for a peaceful outdoor backdrop that offered variety without requiring too much walking or posing time. Ultimately, the garden setting was ideal because it provided soft greenery, texture, and natural depth while keeping the experience comfortable for an expecting mother.

Creating Natural Layers in Photos
During each session, we look for ways to create depth by using natural layers in the scene. In fact, small choices in composition can make the final images feel more dimensional and refined.
In the gardens, for example, we achieved this by placing elements in both the foreground and background. As a result, these layers add beauty, dimension, and a sense of place while keeping the focus on the couple.
Often, we shoot with a wide aperture so the subject stays sharp while the background becomes soft and creamy. In turn, this approach creates a romantic look, adds color and texture, and keeps attention on the most important part of the photograph: the people in front of the camera. Additionally, it helps the setting support the story without distracting from it.

Soft Light by the Water for Maternity Photos

For beach sessions, we love working during the sunset hour. As the sun moves lower on the horizon, the light becomes softer and more flattering, which helps us avoid harsh shadows on our clients. In addition, we use reflectors and off-camera lighting when needed to balance the glow of the sunset with clean, polished light on the couple. Because wind can be a challenge near the ocean, we pay close attention to hair, wardrobe movement, and positioning to create relaxed, beautiful results. Meanwhile, the shoreline adds movement and atmosphere, giving the portraits a calm, romantic feel.
Using Off-Camera Lighting for a Polished Look
Alyssa has gorgeous hair, so we wanted that detail to shine in her portraits. Therefore, we used light modifiers to highlight both Alyssa and Chris in a flattering way while keeping the overall look warm, romantic, and true to the setting.
