Family Portrait Yorktown Outdoor Family Portraits
Yorktown has so many beautiful outdoor locations. It is a perfect backdrop for some gorgeous family portraits. Meet the Reed family. We were delighted to be able to photograph their family. They choose to schedule their family portrait session in Yorktown. They knew that it would lend itself to gorgeous photos.
With their family, we choose 2 different locations for their outdoor photos. Both locations were within 5 minutes of each other so it made it convenient. It also provided the opportunity for a variety of photos and backgrounds. We started the family portrait session out at a historic mansion. The property has a gorgeous landscape lined with a white fence. On the property there are a few beautiful buildings. When you have a combination of a beautiful landscape and buildings, it creates a beautiful backdrop. When you have a beautiful backdrop for your portraits, you get beautiful portraits.

Couple Portrait As you look at their portraits you will see that there was much planning that went into their outfits. This is a great example of how to dress for family portraits. We always get asked what to wear for our family portraits. We have actually designed an online magazine that help our family’s decide on what to wear. You will see that all four people in the family coordinate beautifully without being in the exact same color. To us, this is more pleasing to the eye. They choose one of two colors to run throughout everyone’s outfit.
On Location Family Portraits
We finished up photographing family portraits at the historic mansion property and headed to our second location. There we found a completely different look, style and background for our portraits. In all of our photo sessions we like to present our clients with a variety of images. As you can see, we achieved our goal.

Outdoor Family Portrait Let me start by saying what an honor it is to photograph the Hodges family. We have been photographing them for years. We first met them in 2008 where Stu Hodges of Waters Edge Church, was officiating the wedding. I will tell you that in meeting both Stu and Tabitha Hodges, it was love at first sight.
Shortly after that wedding, they brought us their children to us for a photography session. In 2010 Waters Edge Church hired us to photograph their live cd that they were recording. You can view some of those musician shots here. In 2011, we started attending Waters Edge Church.
We now have made photographing the Hodges family an annual event.
Outdoor Family Portrait Sessions
We love outdoor family portrait sessions. In creating great portrait sessions choosing the right location and the right lighting is key. We are always searching for great places to have our outdoor family portrait sessions. We have come to love Windsor Castle Park.
When we are looking for an outdoor location for photographing, we look for color, texture and lighting. Windsor Castle Park works perfectly for those three. We like to have interesting backgrounds in our images with color and texture. When you choose an area that has interesting backgrounds it adds visual stimulation for the viewer that otherwise could be quite boring. We often incorporate the landscape of where the photo session takes place. We do a balance of wide angle and telephoto shots. The reason for the wide angle is to incorporate the backgrounds. We want families to remember not only their photos but the experience they had on a photo session. We always try to create a great experience for all of our photography sessions. We want our families to remember what it was like. We want them to remember where they were. We want them to remember things that happened. Really, we want them to remember what a great experience they had.
The last key element is lighting. As a photographer, lighting is everything. We often schedule our family portraits close to sunset so that we are able to capture the sweet light. We also incorporate some flash for great exposures and in some images moodiness.

On every family photo shoot we will break away to photograph the children. When we are photographing them we will do different groupings. We always photograph the child together. We will pose them as a group and then also incorporate some casual, fun sibling portraits.

The holidays are a great time when family gathers together. That sometimes is the best time to schedule your family portrait session. For some families, their children are spread out all over the country and sometimes in different countries. That was the case for this beautiful family. Christmas was going to be exciting as they were all going to be together to celebrate.
The Koelling family knew the importance of a family portrait. Gathering your family becomes increasingly more difficult as everyone grows up and starts their own career. Family portrait sessions become more and more sparse and therefore, more and more important. When was the last time that you scheduled a professional family portrait session?
We love outdoor family photo sessions. We also love to incorporate the elements and structures of the area where we are photographing. When choosing where to have your family portrait session it is important to look at many elements.
1. What will my backdrop be?
2. Is there color, for contrast?
3. What time of the day will be the best light?
4. Which direction will the sun be setting?
These are just a few questions to ask yourself.
All of these questions, along with many other elements create a great family portrait.

We love to photograph families. We always strive to capture beautiful family photos. When we are photographing a family portrait session, we capture a variety of photos.
The Samuelson family took time to carefully coordinate their outfits. This is so important when it comes to family portraits. As a photographer you want everyone to blend, not necessarily match. When you use punches of color in your accessories, this creates interest in your photos. An example of that would be dad’s red tie. Another example would be the daughters’ red flower. In this family portrait session, there are a few colors woven throughout each of the family members. Red, black and white were colors that all family members has incorporated into each outfit. Texture in your outfits also bring interest to photographs. Dad’s jackets and the son’s vest all have an element of texture bringing dimension to their portraits.
This family is a great example of “what to wear” on your family portrait session.

For this family portrait photography session we started right outside of our downtown studio. We used a vintage settee on our cobblestone streets to set the tone for a beautiful family picture. We love to incorporate interesting props that also help with family portrait posing.

He was only a few weeks old so they were worried. Would he sit still? Would things be chaotic? Would we ever be able to capture a good picture of their beautiful family pet?
